Described as a 'true visionary and thought leader for fire safety', Andrew has been Editor of the internationally renowned FIRE magazine for 24 years, in which time he has become the UK's most highly honoured fire and rescue journalist.
Andrew has been Editor of FIRE magazine since 2000 - 'the trusted voice of fire & emergency'; Editor of International Fire Professional - the journal of the Institution of Fire Engineers - since 2012; and founder and host of the highly acclaimed Excellence in Fire & Emergency Awards since 2014. He was the co-founder in 2004 of the International Joint Operations Command Conference (the first international multi-agency disaster response event).
In 2020 Andrew received the Coronavirus Journalism Excellence - Best Comment accolade from the Press Gazette's Journalism Matters: Excellence in Reporting Coronavirus series for his white paper, 'Coronavirus: A Five-Step Reset for Fire and Emergency Leaders'. The opinion piece was selected from over 600 nominations across eight categories. In 2021 Andrew received international recognition with the Tabbies Editor's Column Silver Award.
As Chair of the Board of Trustees of The Fire Fighters Charity from 2016-2020 Andrew was the first non-Fire Service trustee to lead the charity and is currently a trustee of the Fire Service Research and Training Trust, and FIRE AID, an alliance of organisations and services providing fire and rescue aid and training to countries facing the greatest challenges.
Andrew has chaired numerous congresses and conferences and has spoken at Number 10 Downing Street on behalf of The Fire Fighters Charity alongside then Home Secretary Sajid Javid in June 2018, and His Royal Highness the Duke of Cambridge at the reopening of the charity's Harcombe House centre in Devon in September 2019.
In his tenure as Chair of The Fire Fighters Charity, the organisation saw a significant turnaround with the Harcombe House centre undergoing a £1.8 million refurbishment and being repurposed to provide physical, mental and social wellbeing support for the whole family.
In July 2019 Andrew formed a new company with fire sector colleagues to take over the fire group of products - Fire Knowledge - and is now the Editor and Publisher of the magazines and events portfolio and is host of the Fire Knowledge Insights podcasts and firefighter safety webinars. Andrew is currently the media and communications instructor on the International Brigade Command Course for future chief fire officers at the Fire Service College, and is working with the Institution of Fire Engineers on promoting research and volunteering.
In the June 2023 King's Birthday Honours, Andrew became an Officer of the Order of the British Empire for services to the Fire Fighters Charity and fire safety and was cited as having 'shared knowledge and improved professional practice, helping to keep communities safe'.
